What to look for when recruiting

So the time has come for some fresh faces in your team. Whether your business is expanding, an existing employee has moved on to another opportunity or anything else, it’s important to take the right approach to recruitment to ensure you get the best result for both parties. That said, screening candidates and conducting interviews often gets put at the bottom of the to do list and it can be hard to clear your head when you finally get around to it. Hiring is never completely black-and-white, but here’s some points to consider when you need new staff.

1. Always consider attitude, commitment and other personal traits. Skills and qualifications are often important, particularly in certain industries, however it’s important that you also to ensure they will be the right fit for your team. After all, someone may have all the skills for the role but lack the drive and work ethic that another candidate can demonstrate.

2. Avoid sourcing candidates from the same pool each time you recruit. This may be convenient, but narrowing the channels through which you search for employees can limit your available pool. A recruiting tool that works for one business may not necessarily work for another.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask staff for referrals, particularly those who you highly value within your team. This can often lead to finding recruits of a similar caliber that share the values of you and your company.

4. Be clear about the role and avoid beating around the bush. While it’s important to entice applications, too many job listings are overly vague about responsibilities and expectations and clearly oversell when it’s not required. By being clear and open when defining the role, you give yourself a much better chance of finding a suitable candidate.

5. Be thorough in the recruitment process and use it to demonstrate your values to each candidate. While they need to make an impression on you, it’s also important that you make the effort during interviews and reference checks to show your value as an employer.

6. Openly discuss remuneration so that everyone is on the same page. Some may feel uncomfortable talking about salary expectations and similar topics, but it’s important to bring it up early before any misunderstands arise. Honesty is your best policy in this regard.

7. Always look to hire people better than you. If it sounds strange when worded that way, think of it like this: surrounding yourself with smarter people is the best way to expand your own knowledge and grow as a business. In the end, your business is only as good as the team who runs it.
